Driving while intoxicated is a leading factor contributing to fatal collisions in Texas, according to the National Highway Trafic Safety Administration. A DPS spokesman, Tom Vinger, says that the DPS writes more tickets and arrest more drunk drivers during holiday weekends.

Impaired driving is a contributing factor in nearly half of all Texas fatal traffic accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In 2006, Texas had 1,354 fatalities related to a driver having a blood-alcohol level over 0.08 - the legal limit for intoxication.

Drivers should not rely on their judgment even after one drink, Vinger said. If people can't take a cab or assign a designated driver, then it's better not to drink at all.

In Texas, a drunk, causing an accident in which there are injuries or death, may not be the only one liable for the injuries or losses suffered. Texas has a law that could make the bar, where the person drank, liable for the injuries that a drunk causes while intoxicated. If you have been injured by a drunk driver you should talk to an attorney, like the ones at Cole, Cole and Easley who specialize in personal injury.
