Seat belt may have saved a life

A 37-year old Robstown man died after he apparently lost control of his Dodge ram truck and veered off the road causing the truck to roll. He was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the truck. A DPS official said speed and alcohol were not factors in causing the accident.

Early morning car accident takes life of passenger

An early morning car accident on October 12, 2008, took the life of 19-year old passenger Tray Lynn Dabney. The driver in the one-vehicle accident, Barbara Cox, was taken to Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City, Texas, where she was listed in good condition.

Seat Belts on School Buses

On Friday August 22, 2008, Gov. Rick Perry went to West Brook High School in Beaumont to sign legislation known as "Ashley's and Alicia's law."

Past bills have failed, but when the parents and friends of Ashley Brown and Alicia Bonura who were killed in a bus accident, lobbied the Legislature, this time there was success.

Traffic Cams Could Help Make Intersections Safer

City officials in Victoria, Texas are considering placing cameras at Red Light intersections. This could be a significant step forward in traffic safety. According to the Texas House Research Organization wrecks at red light are costly:

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) crash database shows injuries and fatalities stemming from red-light crashes grew from 10,000 annually in 1975 to 24,000 per year in 2001, and a recent Federal Highway Administration study identified Texas as one of the worst states for red-light running. The financial costs of these accidents in Texas have been estimated at between $1.4 billion and $3 billion annually in medical, insurance, and related expenses.

According to the same study, cameras help prevent accidents and save lives:

The federal Transportation Research Board found in its "Impact of Red Light Camera Enforcement on Crash Experience" survey conducted in 2003 that a majority of red-light camera jurisdictions reported decreases in accidents and violations as a result of the crashes, including:

•Charlotte, NC, where all crash types dropped by 19 percent and crash severity fell by 16 percent during a three-year period;

•Sacramento, CA, where red-light crashes decreased 39 percent during a one-year period; and

•Baltimore County, MD, where red-light crashes fell 30 percent during a one-year period.

Traffic light cameras would have the added benefit of eliminating the guess work in a red light swearing match. It is very common for two people at a lighted intersection to swear that they had a green light. A picture would clearly show which party is correct. Cameras would help insure that the innocent party is properly compensated for their injuries and damages.

Fatalities largely caused by impaired drivers

Driving while intoxicated is a leading factor contributing to fatal collisions in Texas, according to the National Highway Trafic Safety Administration. A DPS spokesman, Tom Vinger, says that the DPS writes more tickets and arrest more drunk drivers during holiday weekends.

Impaired driving is a contributing factor in nearly half of all Texas fatal traffic accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In 2006, Texas had 1,354 fatalities related to a driver having a blood-alcohol level over 0.08 - the legal limit for intoxication.
Drivers should not rely on their judgment even after one drink, Vinger said. If people can't take a cab or assign a designated driver, then it's better not to drink at all.

In Texas, a drunk, causing an accident in which there are injuries or death, may not be the only one liable for the injuries or losses suffered. Texas has a law that could make the bar, where the person drank, liable for the injuries that a drunk causes while intoxicated. Texting and Automobile Accidents

More and more often texting is being cited as a potential cause of automobile accidents. Often, but not always, these accidents involve teens. Not only does texting require two hands, it also requires considerable attention which is diverted from task related to driving. At least one state, California, is considering passing laws prohibiting texting while driving.

Two SUVs in Accident and Shut Down Freeway

An SUV traveling on the I-405 hit another SUV causing an accident. The mess shut all the northbound freeway lanes.

All northbound lanes were closed just after the accident, which happened at 10:25 a.m. Traffic slowly creeped through on the shoulder. The backup extended more than 2 miles to the I-5 interchange at Southcenter. The southbound HOV lane also had to be closed for aid vehicles.

No one was injured in the accident. The police are still investigating the accident and ask anyone who witnessed the accident to contact them.

Toddler Hit by Car Near Edelweiss Park

A 2-year-old was struck by a car along Victoria Avenue as her family was entering their car. The family had been visiting Edelweiss Park.

Police said the 2-year-old girl was hit by a driver at Edelweiss Park in the 3900 block of Victoria Avenue. Sgt. Doug Muxworthy of the College Station Police Department said soccer games were in progress at the park when a woman and her three children were trying to leave.
As the family tried to enter their vehicle, which was parked along Victoria Avenue, the young girl got in to roadway and she was struck by a passing vehicle.
The girl was taken to College Station Medical Center, where she was being treated Sunday night.

It is unknown what condition the toddler is in and her name has not been released. The accident is being investigated by police.
