Victoria County Texas Workplace Accident Kills Man

On Wednesday, October 1, 2008, a man in his mid-20s was killed just south of Victoria, Texas at a grain silo. The man and two other workers were working inside the silo attempting to loosen up some grain.

At approximately 8:00 a.m., the man fell when the grain loosened up and sucked him down. After some time, the firefighters' rescue mission turned into a recovery. It took several hours for the workers to recover the man's body.

181 Miners in China Trapped, Presumed Dead

181 Chinese miners have been trapped since Friday in a mining accident when a dike on a nearby river burst and sent water flooding into the mine and trapping the miners. Other victims were trapped in a nearby shaft in the Huayuan Mining Co. mine.

According to media reports, rescuers have worked desperately since the dike breakage to pump out water that has poured into the mine from the river. According to media reports, water has risen to heights of over 50 feet, and the outlook is not very optimistic for the miners.

China's mining accident occurs in the wake of two recent U.S. accidents in which several miners are feared to have lost their lives in Utah.

For more information on this subject matter, please refer to the section on Worksite Injuries.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Courtney Mills

Workplace Death Statistics Released

While I haven't seen Texs' stats yet, Under the Golden Dome's Bill brought to my attention a report released by the Massachusetts AFL-CIO and the Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health (MassCOSH) stating that MA had six more on-the-job deaths in 2005 than in 2004.

"It is unconscionable that this tragic loss of life continues unabated in workplaces across the Commonwealth," said Robert J. Haynes, President of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO. "We mourn the 78 workers who lost their lives last year, and we are deeply saddened by recent workplace tragedies including the April 3rd scaffolding collapse in Boston that took the lives of two workers and a passerby."

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Staff Writer
